Thermopolis, WY
What To Expect
Located in the heart of central Wyoming, Thermopolis is one of the best-kept secrets for spring and fall fly fishing on the upper Big Horn River. Thanks to natural hot springs nearby, the water stays warm through the colder months, making this a prime destination for shoulder season fishing.
Trout here are healthy, hard-fighting, and responsive to nymphs, streamers, and dry flies depending on the time of year. The river below Wedding of the Waters is less pressured than the more famous waters, giving you solitude with solid fishing.
Our float trips in Thermopolis are perfect for anglers looking to extend their season or avoid the summer crowds. The scenery is unique—red rock cliffs, cottonwood-lined banks, and herds of wild sheep add to the day’s adventure.
What To Bring
Fishing in Thermopolis shines during the shoulder seasons—spring and fall—when the river stays warmer thanks to the nearby hot springs, but the air can be unpredictable. One hour you’re in a t-shirt, the next you’re layering up.
Recommended Gear:
-
Waders and sturdy boots (we often float, but hop out to wade key runs)
-
Breathable, moisture-wicking base layers
-
Waterproof rain jacket or shell
-
Hat and sun protection, even in cooler months
-
Polarized sunglasses for glare reduction and sight fishing
-
A warm beanie or gloves if you’re fishing early or late in the season
Dry bags are helpful for stashing layers and personal items. We’ll have extra storage space in the boat, too.
RSO provides all fishing gear if needed, but you’re welcome to bring your rod (5–6 wt), reels, and flies. We’ll chat before your trip to help you dial it in.
