Fort Smith, MT
What To Expect
Located in south-central Montana near the edge of the Crow Indian Reservation, Fort Smith is home to one of the best-known tailwater fisheries in the country—the Bighorn River. This world-renowned stretch is famous for its clear, cold water, abundant insect hatches, and healthy wild brown and rainbow trout populations.
Fishing here is consistent in all four seasons. Spring and fall bring strong baetis and midge hatches, while summer is dry fly heaven. Winter offers solitude and surprisingly active fish thanks to stable flows from the Yellowtail Dam.
Expect long floats through high-desert canyons, rising trout, and, depending on the conditions, opportunities to fish dries, nymphs, and streamers. Due to its accessibility and productivity, the Bighorn is ideal for both beginners and experienced anglers.
What To Bring
The Big Horn River is fishable year-round, meaning weather conditions can shift quickly, even in summer. Montana mornings can start brisk and warm up fast, so dressing in layers is key. You’ll spend whole days on the water, often in open boats with little shelter, so sun protection and insulation matter.
Recommended Gear:
-
Breathable waders and boots (felt soles are ideal for grip)
-
Layered clothing: synthetic base layers, fleece or insulated midlayer, waterproof shell
-
Polarized sunglasses (brown or amber lens works best for spotting fish)
-
Hat with a brim for sun protection
-
Sunscreen and lip balm (yes, even in winter!)
-
Gloves and a warm hat for colder months
RSO provides all fishing gear if needed, but you’re welcome to bring your rod (5–6 wt), reels, and flies. We’ll chat before your trip to help you dial it in.
